The two-year maize-soybean system receives mineral N at recommended levels. The 3- and 4-year systems receive organic fertilizer with limited synthetic N. 

Weed management split-plots (conventional versus low dosages of herbicides) were introduced in 2008 and maintained until 2022.

For the first 20 years of the experiment, the two-year maize-soy system had reduced tillage and the 3- and 4-year systems had conventional tillage. Beginning in fall 2021, the entire experiment was shifted to strip-till and no-till practices.
