maize (CS1); maize-soybean (CS2); organic maize-soybean-wheat/clover (CS3); maize-alfalfa-alfalfa-alfalfa (CS4); organic maize-oats/alfalfa-alfalfa (CS5); rotationally grazed cool-season perennial pasture (CS6); switchgrass (NS1)*; low-diversity prairie (NS2)*; high-diversity prairie (NS3)*
* Each native system (NS) has a periodically burned, seasonally grazed, annually harvested section
Conventional corn (CS1) and corn-soybean (CS2) systems receive mineral fertilizer at recommended rates. The organically managed three-year corn-soybean-wheat/clover (CS3) system is fertilized from a combination of biologically fixed N, composted poultry manure, and potassium sulfate. The four-year dairy systems (CS4) is fertilized by dairy manure and potassium chloride with lime additions to correct pH as needed. The organic 3-year dairy forage system (CS5) is fertilized by dairy manure and potassium sulfate with lime addition to correct pH as needed. The rotationally grazed pasture system (CS6) is fertilized primarily by grazing livestock as well as potassium chloride as needed based on soil tests.
